Chapter Two
There are so many words in our vocabulary.
Did you know there are thousands of ways to say you care?
A hundred ways to say you love?
But only one way to say I’m here for you forever?
SHANE
“Do you like it?” I asked Cass. Our living room floor was cleaned up yesterday, but now, it was strewn with colorful wrapping paper while the tree sends glittering lights across our faces.
Cass nodded with a huge smile, throwing his arms around my shoulders.
Ryza waves around a coloring book while she sits on a giant stuffed horse she got for Christmas.
“What about you, Ryza? Do you like your gifts?”
Ryza nods happily her head bobbing furiously with twinkling eyes. “Sissy! What’d you get?! What’d you get?!”
I smiled, holding up a handmade card with toddler drawings and a store bought card that says happy birthday Sis. It was kind of obvious which card was whose but it didn’t matter, I loved them both.
“Is that awwwlll???” She asked, leaning forward on her hands, checking the Christmas tree for any other presents with a disappointed look across her face.
Ryza still believes in Santa Claus, she still believed that EVERYONE gets presents. One day she’d realize that I haven’t actually gotten a present since our parents died.
I smiled. “Yeah that’s all. But I got you two so it’s the best gift I could ever ask for.”
“Cheesy.” Cass muttered still hugging me happily.
The phone rang and I scrambled to pick up the receiver from my odd position on the floor.
I yanked it, crashing to the ground in a heap with Cass lying on my back and Ryza on my legs, the plastic pressed against my ear. “Hello Christoph residence?”
“Hmm, so that’s your last name.”
My heart did butterflies and collapsed into my stomach. I recognized that voice, how could I even ever thing about forgetting it?
“Matt?”
“Yes?” I could hear the smile in his voice.
“Who’s Matt ?!” Cass yelled, even though he was right next to me and therefore had no reason to. I think he just wanted Matt to hear him.
“Your brother I presume?” Matt said on the line.
I nodded and then forgot he couldn’t see me due to the fact that we’re talking on a PHONE. Maybe I should remember the definition of the plastic contraption in my hand. “Yes.”
“WHO’S MATT?!” Cass yelled again louder, being even more obnoxious.
“A friend!” I mouthed, throwing the nearest soft object at his face from an awkward angle.
“Doesn’t seem like just ‘a friend.’”
My little brother was taunting me. I can’t believe it; screw Christmas spirit the little brat was going to get a serious piece of masking tape wrapped around his loud mouth.
Matt laughed in the phone. “Did I catch you at a bad time?”
“No!” I said too quickly to be casual. “This is just how it normally is anytime there’s a phone call.” I made a face that basically said ‘I wish it wasn’t like that though’.
Ryza crawled over me and Cass, putting more weight on me, the person on the bottom. Her eyes were wide as she pressed her face towards the phone. “Matt? Awe you sissy’s boyfwend?” She asked so innocently and easily that I just sat there dumbstruck at the bold little child.
I pushed her away from the phone quickly, trying to do damage control as she giggled.
My little runts were trying to destroy me!
Matt just laughed on the other end of the line and I felt a mad blush rise to my cheeks. “You never told me you had a sister.”
“Ahahaaaa, well you know we did just meet and all, I can’t exactly tell you my whole life in fifteen minutes.”
“Well then, how about we got out and do something then? That’ll be more than fifteen minutes.”
“Is this a date?” My voice sounded playful but my heart pounded faster in my chest, so loud I thought that everyone might be able to hear it.
“Uh-no not at all! Never! I just wanted to get to know you better and all!” He stuttered and tried to cover for himself quickly. “So how about it?” He tried to be casual but I was laughing.
My inner brain screamed at me so loud I almost blurted the words right there. YES YES!!! SAY YES YOU STUPID IDIOT YOU’RE ONLY A TEENAGER ONCE SAAAAAYYYY YESSS!!! NOW DO IT!
“B-But the kids….an-and no one is home….” I said with a strained voice, holding back the voice that so desperately wanted to say yes.
“Well, bring them along. I’m sure they’ll love it.”
“Love what?” My mind crashed back to reality.
“It’s a surprise, Miss Shane. All you have to do is say yes.”
“Yes.” I laughed.
Matt told me the apartment complex his roommate and himself lived in, telling me t meet him there in an hour.
Yes I was crazy for agreeing to meet a complete stranger, but you know, my whole life has been one stupid crazy thing after another. So god be damned if I wasn’t going to do one more stupid thing.
“I will see you then.”
“Bye, Shane.” Is it possible to love how someone just says your name? As if it’s highly treasured?
I pressed the end button, getting up to a sitting position and leaning against the wall. I was extremely exhausted from just one stupid phone call. I turned my head to look at the culprits. “I’M GOING TO EAT YOU!!!!” I yelled, diving playfully for the two brats I love so much.
MATT
I stood outside my apartment complex, breath puffing clouds in the air around me. Mello loomed over in the window six stories up waiting to see what kind of girl could possibly make me like I was an hour ago on the phone.
I scanned the crowd for her face, because I knew I’d remember it. I haven’t forgotten it, not one single feature.
I couldn’t forget her; I don’t think I’d ever be able to.
Then I saw her, holding onto the gloved hands of two children. Her hair was once again in a ponytail, curls bouncing up at the ends, and a shorter clump that couldn’t reach the elastic flopping in her gold hazel eyes. Fuzzy white earmuffs were placed perfectly on her ears.
I had to pry my eyes away from her to look at the kids she held hands with so lovingly.
One was a young girl about three or four with the same hazely gold eyes as Shane except for her hair was more of a honey brown color and fell in fluffy curly pigtails.
The other was a boy who must be in his middle school years. He had sharp soft features like Shane and blackened brown freckles ran across his cheeks in similar patterns to Shane’s as well. He also had the same golden orange hair color except for his was straight and hung in his seaglass blue eyes.
Shane smiled at me, red darkening her already frozen cheeks. “Hi.” It was breathless and hearing her voice not through some electronic device made me want to collapse, either that or hug her tightly.
“Where awe we goin?” The little girl asked in toddle speak, wide eyes staring up at me.
Shane laughed, her breath gasping in puffs. “This is Ryza, my younger sister, and this is Cass, my younger brother.” She lifted up a hand from each child in perspective with their name.
“Well, I thought we’d go do something fun outside…… like ice skating?” I made my voice sound childish, which wasn’t hard to do when you bent down to face a child in the freezing cold.
“Yay! Skate! Skate!” She tugged on Shane’s arm, bouncing hyperactively. I can imagine just that one alone would be a handful.
Shane smiled, her eyes twinkling. “That sounds like an awesome idea.” But she looked down to her older brother to see his opinion. For some reason the fact that she cared so much about her family made me like her even more, even though I’d never think it was possible to like someone that much.
Her brother-Cass- looked between the two of us, staring intently at my face for a few moments before shrugging. “Why not?”
Shane shrugged apologetically, pulling the two of them along towards the skate rental place outside of the warming house.
I couldn’t place an emotion to the feeling I got watching her take care of her siblings so closely, I only knew it made my heart beat faster. To the feeling I got just watching her.
There was just definitely something to this girl.
SHANE
I laced up Ryza’s skates, pulling tightly on the strings to double check they wouldn’t fall off her toddler feet.
“Skate! Skate!” She repeated over and over again, bouncing on the wooden bench, making my job even more difficult.
But, I laughed anyway, tucking the stupid chunk of hair behind my ear in an attempt to get it out of my face. “Ryza, please stop bouncing for just a minute, Kay?”
Ryza nodded. “’Tay sissy.” Her bouncing, thankfully, ceased long enough for me to finish.
Cass laced up his shoes on the bench next to her, his eyes drifting to the bench behind me where Matt sat with his legs outstretched, skates already on his feet and tied.
“There, all done.” I finished off the bow with a sigh.
Ryza giggled and started to stand up; I bolted my hand out to steady her.
“Skate! Skate!” Ryza chanted again. I chuckled.
“Let me get my skates on, then I’ll go out there with you.” I sat down on the bench next to her as Cass stood up with perfect balance on his blades. Stupid hockey players.
“I’ll take her out. Come on Ryza, let’s go skate!” Cass grabbed a hold of her biceps through her puffy jacket, leading her towards the door.
He smiled over his shoulder at me.
I swear, that kid……
“Your siblings really love you, don’t they?” Matt asked with a smile on his lips.
I had a mad blush on my cheeks as I sat up on the bench, slipping my feet in the rentals and bending down to tie them. “Yeah, I guess you could say that.” That’s because I’m the only family they’ve had. I had to bite my tongue to stop myself from speaking any more.
Something about this guy just made me feel like if I wasn’t careful I’d end up spilling my guts to him. And that was a dangerous prospect.
I finished tying my laces, pushing myself to my feet carefully. My legs wobbled underneath me unsteadily.
“Ready to go?” Matt asked turning to start walking towards the door.
“Wai- uh!” I started forward, the single blade tipping to the side, my balance wavering. I crashed down to the ground in a heap.
Matt spun around quickly, spotting me down on the ground and bending down on his knees next to me. “Are you all right? What happened?” His voice was mixed with worry.
“I- uh- fell. I haven’t exactly ever skated before.” I blushed a bright red, looking down at my tangled legs.
Matt laughed. “That all? Come on, I’ll show you.” His hand stretched towards me.
I looked up at him, a smile forcing its way to my lips as I took his hand in mine.
That simple gesture felt like the beginning of something, but I don’t really know what.
He pulled me to my feet in one swift moment. I brushed off the dust from my pants.
“You okay?”
I smiled again, looking up at him. “Yeah, I’m fine.”
He grabbed my biceps much like Cass had with Ryza, pulling me through the doors from the warm heat to the chill frosty bite of the cold outside.
But it wasn’t unpleasant; I don’t think anything could have been unpleasant at that moment with him standing so close next to me.
He pulled me out onto the ice, and I nearly fell right there, my feet sliding first and the rest of me still standing in the original place.
I let out a yelp but Matt held tight to my arms. “You’re going to learn how to skate, I promise you that.”
“But-” I started to protest but he shook his head, flipping around to skate backwards. Frigging show off.
“Come on, I’m doing this for you. Think of it as my Christmas present to you. Now move. One foot in front of the other and bring your body with the skates this time.” Little did he know I haven’t gotten a Christmas present in forever, so I obliged, for his sake.
I gave a meaningless glare and tried to move my feet but ended up slipping and digging that sharp edge in the front of the blades into the ice and almost flying forward on my face.
Matt held tightly onto my arms the whole time, not letting go, always there to keep me from falling.
That was not helping anything. His close proximity messed with my brain and made him all I could think about instead of the knives glued to my shoes.
But my stupid brain just kept thinking of how big and warm his hands were, how good he smelt, almost like smoke and chocolate. The way his eyes laughed as he pulled me along.
I desperately tried to shake the thoughts from my head, sighing audibly. “I can’t do it.”
He shook his head, gripping my arms harder. “Uh-uh I KNOW you can do it! Just push off, one foot in front of the other and glide.”
He tapped my thigh with his knee.
I tried not to shiver as I did as he said, putting one foot in front of another, pushing off. Soon enough I was doing it. I was skating. For the first time.
And then he let go of my arms, cheering me on as he hung back behind me and ended up getting farther and farther behind me as I gained more confidence and glided around the rink at high speeds.
Children’s laughter filled my ears and the sounds of skates slapping the ice echoed around us. I took in a deep breath of cold air, for the first time in a few years, actually feeling relaxed.
That’s when I started to get this nagging feeling like something was missing.
Cass and Ryza are okay, they’re having fun see look at them, you can relax now. My mind spoke, trying to silence that strange feeling.
Matt screamed behind me, but I couldn’t hear him, I was going too fast.
Then I spotted a giant ass white boulder pile of snow and I realized what was missing.
One: I didn’t know how to turn. Two: I didn’t know how to stop.
Yeah, isn’t that just amazing?
MATT
She was so beautiful; she looked like she knew exactly what she was doing. Her hair flew in a curtain and the cold made her cheeks rosy. She flew along the ice with swan-like grace. I was so entranced in watching her I almost didn’t see the snow pile in front of her until it was too late.
Shitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshit…….. My mind screamed at me in overdrive as I punched it to reach Shane. “SLOW DOWN!!” I screamed at her.
But she couldn’t hear me.
I was an idiot for letting go; she only knew how to move! How was she supposed to stop!!
“SHANE!” I screamed.
She hit the snow bank body smashing into it, hard, and crashing through the puffy snow, half her body smashing into the ice on the ground and the other half submerged in snow.
I stopped my skates, sliding towards her and crashing to my knees to pull her out of the snow bank.
Cass and Ryza were already slowly making their way here, worried faces glued to Shane.
I yanked her from the snow, setting her on my lap. She groaned.
Shane was so light, so paper thin, her skin translucent.
She was so beautiful there safely in my arms.
Where we touched sent tingles through my skin.
This girl was amazing.
Stupid mind! Stop thinking about these stupid things while she’s hurt! I’m trying to focus here!
“Shane!” I shook her gently. “Are you okay?”
Her eyes petered open, bright eyes staring at me with half consciousness. “Matt?”
I laughed with relief. “Jeez! Don’t scare me like that! I’d thought you’d been really hurt!”
She chuckled weakly. “I’m fine, but can I ask you something?” She leaned against my chest, causing slight surprise to run through my body, while all the while loving it.
“Anything.” I said breathlessly as Cass and Ryza made it to us.
“Can we not go skating next time?”
I laughed. “Next time? After all that you want to see me again?”
She smiled a big wide mischievous smile. “I thought this wasn’t a date?”
I leaned over her, breath creating clouds in the air. “Maybe I changed my mind.”
“Liar.” She closed her eyes but she still smirked; her body shaking with laughter.
“Come on, let’s get you to the warming house and take you home.”
I sat up, helping her to her feet, but as soon as her right foot touched the ground she let out a strangled cry. She would have collapsed in a heap if I hadn’t wrapped my arms around her torso just then to catch her.
“My ankle.” She said hoarsely.
I looked down at her ankle stupidly even though it was covered with clothing and bent down, scooping her up into my arms bridal style.
She let out a surprised yelp and looked up at me with a red face. “You don’t have to do this; I’m fine I can walk.”
She was so cold in my arms. “Nope. You can’t so for now just let me do this one thing for you.”
She gave me a half hearted attempt at a glare and I just laughed.
Yes, I could never ever forget this girl.
