Chapter Three
The people you meet are interesting.
Are they hiding something? Is the face you’re seeing a lie?
Who are they?
Your mailman, the paper boy, the grocer, the person you just passed on the street, that student.
Are they FBI agents? Criminals? Singers? Writers? Murderers?
You won’t know until it’s too late.
MATT
I toyed with my food on my plate, not really eating much of it. I stared at it in my dream-like state, my cheek rested on one fist.
Mello stares at my blankly over his fork, raising one eyebrow.
“She really that great?” Mello asked.
I look at him dumbfounded, as if he just told a five year old me that Santa Clause didn’t exist. “OF COURSE SHE IS!”
“You only just met her, dumbass.”
“Still, the time I’ve spent with her makes me think that it was all worth something. Like this was what my life was meant for. To meet her. To meet Shane.” I’m pretty sure I looked like a total love struck noob at that moment, but I couldn’t really bring myself to care. It was just Mello after all.
Mello sighed, eyes softening. “Did you think that maybe it would be-” His eyes met my confused face and he shook his head quickly, taking a big bite of his food. “Never mind.”
Now I was genuinely curious to find out what he was about to say. “What? Tell me! You can’t just leave it hanging like that!”
Mello shook his head. “Finish your food, then go beat your frigging high score on that new video game so I don’t have to hear you be a love struck puppy.”
I glared at him. “You’re terrible at changing the subject, but hey if you don’t want to tell me I’ll find out sooner or later.”
“I’m sure you will.” Mello mumbled soft enough so that I didn’t hear.
“What?!”
Mello shook his head. “I’m going out.” I watched him stand up gruffly, placing his plate in the sink and walking to the door. “Don’t wait up.” The door slammed behind him.
I took a big bite of my food and stared curiously at the door. “Jeez who got your panties in a bunch?”
SHANE
I walked awkwardly with the cast on my foot, thankful that the painkillers were doing a great job today. Mostly because klutzy me has seemed to find every possible way to run my injured ankle into everything I pass by.
Cass and Ryza were at school today, so I took this wonderful opportunity to get out of the house and into the cold hard world to go grocery shopping.
Because trust me, going by yourself is a lot easier than going with two children who try to smuggle everything junk food into your cart.
I peeled my scarf off as the blast of heat hit me in the face, the warm smiles of grocer welcomers greeting me as they handed me a sheet of coupons.
“Thank you.” I smiled kindly back, yanking free a cart and slipping down the first aisle available to me.
“Let’s see…” I thought out loud, pulling a shopping list from my purse. “We need milk, cheese, noodles, tomato sauce and meatballs and ……” I flipped the small scribbles over. “Chocolate.” The word was scribbled in green crayon and written with terrible hand writing that could only be Ryza’s. Cass’ attempt at adding to the list was below hers. “Cocoa puffs, pudding, chips….. jeezus has anyone ever heard of fruits or vegetables.” I grumbled to myself, looking like an absolute psycho.
I grabbed a can of cheapo tomato sauce from the shelf closest me, plopping two or three of them into the metal cart with a clang.
The noodles above that though, those were more of a problem. I strained for it, trying to go on my tiptoes but with a cast it wasn’t so easy.
A milky hand grasped the box just out of my reach and handed it to me. I turned to look at my savior, eyes wide in slight surprise.
He was about my age, coppery brown hair and reddish brown eyes that were kind. “Hello.” He smiled at me.
“Hi, uh-um….”
“Light, my name’s Light Yagami.” He reached out a hand for me to shake.
I took it. “Shane Christoph, nice to meet you.”
He scratched his head, looking down at the cast on my leg. “So um- if I may ask, what happened?”
I laughed. “I just fail at skating, that’s all.”
“Oh, wow. I hope you’re okay.”
“Yeah, it’s just a small fracture, nothing big really. Thankfully there was snow to catch my fall.”
“Quite a lucky girl you are.”
I shrugged. Not really, my whole life has been one big unlucky thing after the other. But I sure as hell wasn’t going to tell a stranger that. “I guess I am.” I smiled brightly.
“Well I guess I’ll be letting you go now, Shane.”
My eyes widened quickly and I grabbed the sleeve of his coat to stop him. “Wait, could you do one more thing for me?”
He turned and looked over his shoulder at me. “What is it?”
I waved the box of spaghetti noodles. “Could you get me down one more, please?”
He laughed.
MATT
The world was vivid. Too much color, too bright. Too real.
People walked past me, bumped into me, but didn’t stop moving.
“Hey!” I called out. “Where am I?”
There was no answer, the people just kept moving forward, ignoring me.
A girl bumped into me and she stopped, tilting her head to look up at me. “Matt?” She asked.
My eyes snapped to her porcelain face, smiling brightly and wrapping her up in a giant hug. “Shane!”
“Matt, you have to let go. Wouldn’t want me to get hurt now would you?” Her voice was soft, quiet, and robotic.
“Shane? You know I would never hurt you.” I looked up at her confused, gently setting her down.
“Of course I know Matt. You would never hurt me.” It sounded rehearsed.
Then there was a gunshot and I looked to Shane whose eyes were wide as she clutched her stomach, bloodying her hands.
“SHANE!” I cried out stepping towards her to wrap my arms around her, but I found I had something in my hand making it hard to grab her collapsing form.
I looked at my hand with tears in my eyes.
I held a gun.
I bolted upright, falling off the couch and onto the floor in a heap of potato chip bags, game controllers, and the comforter I was wrapped in.
I looked up at the clock in a cold sweat.
1:00 pm. It was still the afternoon.
I relaxed my boy against the couch, taking in deep breaths.
“What the hell was that?” I murmured to myself angrily.
SHANE
The cart squealed as I turned the corner, my mind in the gutters, not really thinking about anything in particular. I grabbed a bottle of shampoo from the shelf, placing it in my already nearly full cart.
“One last stop to make.” I mumbled to myself.
I took a quick turn down the chocolate aisle stopping next to a person standing in the aisle staring at the different brands of chocolate bars.
I studied the boxes as well, looking for one that Cass and Ryza would like, after all what’s the harm of one little treat from their list of junk food?
The person reached forward, grabbing a couple of boxes and placing them in his basket. He looked at me, eyes widening and I turned, cocking my head.
“Can I help you?” I asked.
He was a boy with choppy blond hair and a scar on one side of his face. “Shane?” He asked.
I took a step back, running my good heel into the back of the cart. “How do you know my name?”
The boy smiled. “Nothing creepy by any means, I’m just Matt’s roommate.”
“Oh.” I softened and relaxed, smiling back. “Nice to meet you….uh….”
“Mello. Call me Mello.” He pulled his hood up higher over his head.
“Well, nice to meet you, Mello.”
“Actually I was hoping I’d run into you.” He spoke kind of sadly as I grabbed a box of chocolate from the shelf.
“Why is that?”
H took a deep breath. “For your own safety I suggest you stay away from, Matt. He’s too much of an idiot to realize this yet, but in the future you will end up getting hurt.”
I laughed. “What are you psychic now? Let me tell you something, Mello. I’m glad that you care for my safety, but Matt is my friend. I don’t leave friends no matter what.”
Mello smiled sadly. “I’m glad Matt has you though.”
“And why is that?” I started walking down the aisle towards the checkout, Mello walked with me.
“Because, you were made for each other.”
I felt a blush crawl to my cheeks. “And you think this how?”
Mello chuckled. “It’s just a hunch. Look forward to seeing you more in the future, Shane.” And with that he waved at me and left for a different checkout lane closer to the exit.
~~
The home phone rang loudly, giving me a slight headache.
I ran to get it, leaving all of the grocery bags on the counter.
“Hello, Christoph residence?”
“Shane?”
“Oh hi, Matt.” I smiled to myself, walking back to the kitchen to finish putting away groceries.
“Hey.” There was an audible sigh from the other line. “I’m glad to hear your voice.”
I chuckled. “Well why is that?”
“No reason. I just need to hear it.”
“Is that all?” I raised an eyebrow even though he couldn’t see me.
“Never.”
I laughed again. “Hey, guess what? I met your roommate today, he seems nice.”
“That idiot? Huh. Meet any other interesting people today?”
I thought of the greeters, the people I passed on the street, the boy-Light- who helped me in the grocery store.
“Nah, nobody beats you.”
Matt laughed.
There was a deep feeling in my gut, a sense of warning and foreboding.
I suppose I should have payed more attention to that feeling.
